How do fact-checkers determine which issues to scrutinize?

We explored the critical role of fact-checking in the defence of democracy! In an era saturated with misinformation and a relentless war of truth, citizens often find themselves questioning the credibility of media sources. The constant barrage of misleading information has eroded trust in traditional channels, leading to a disturbing trend where citizens hesitate to believe what they see and hear. The need for accurate, reliable information has never been more pronounced, and fact-checking emerges as a beacon of truth in this complex landscape.

We had the privilege of engaging in a conversation with Vincent Couronne, co-founder, and director of Les Surligneurs, a legal fact-checking media outlet based in France. His insights shed light on the actions fact-checkers take to safeguard democracy in the media realm.

About Vincent Couronne

Vincent Couronne is a co-founder and director of Les Surligneurs since 2017, a legal fact-checking media outlet based in France. He is also a member of the Governance Body and Treasurer of the European Fact-Checking Standards Network. His fields of expertise are on legal aspects of the fight against disinformation: disinformation on the rule of law, but also the law against disinformation such as the Digital Services Act. He has a Ph.D in EU law from the Sorbonne School of Law, now research fellow at Université Paris Saclay and lecturer at Sciences Po Saint-Germain-en-Laye. He has been invited by the European Parliament for a hearing on the harassment of fact-checkers and continue to give conferences on the fight against disinformation as well as developing Les Surligneurs as a media outlet.

Les Surligneurs is a media outlet led by law professors who have set out on a mission to place law at the center of public discourse, particularly in a time when the rule of law is perilously challenged.

By disseminating legal knowledge and thereby enhancing the ability to critically analyze political discourse, the goal is to empower citizens to engage in meaningful debates and safeguard their freedoms.
